Inquiry Questions:
How does Skylander use the media to sell the game?
How are video games made?
What do different Skylanders do / why do kids like them?
Critical Thinking
During our consolidation discussion, K.B. asked a great question:
Why do the Skylanders fight? Why don't they talk to solve their problems?
This generated a great discussion about fighting, conflict resolution, and the importance of a violence-free classroom. I was so impressed to hear everyone thinking about the connections between games and everyday life and contributing to the discussion!
Math Connections
During our research we discovered that many video game characters take 5 days to design on average. J.H. knew that there were 8 Skylander giants, and we wanted to know how many days it would take to design all of the giants altogether. We built our own Skylanders and used manipulatives to count by 1's and 5's to find out the answer! One student even noticed that 5+5+5+5+5+5+5+5 was like 8 x 5! Wow!
We put together a presentation to share our learning with the whole class on Monday! Stay tuned to find out the answers!
We heard all about this Skylander project, so it must have been incredibly engaging! Congratulations on making a 'not so great situation' become so fun and educational. Absolutely brilliant!
