Our Local Community

Today we continued our learning about our local community. We decided to build a miniature community (or as Project X fans have been calling it, a "micro-community"). We had an absolute blast creating so many things!

We started off with a 'big empty field' and then added roads. Students helped to brainstorm ideas about community features that would be important to include. We looked at pictures of real communities and researched questions that urban planners ask when they design cities.

I am so impressed with everyone's hard work! I loved watching as students worked together to create this master piece!

I also loved listening to the conversations that were happening all over the classroom. Students drew maps to explain ideas and used discussion words (agree, disagree, etc.) to make important decisions. I really loved hearing students think about the environment too! Many students noticed how little green space was left after we added all of our buildings. I am looking forward to hearing our class discuss these ideas further tomorrow!

Fantastic work today, Grade 1's!
