Mr. DeGirolamo's class has 15 kids that walk to school!

After planning strategies and putting our plans into actions, we discovered that Mr. DeGirolamo's class has 15 students that walk to school! Students used many strategies to determine this. Here are some of the strategies we used:

- math manipulatives (e.g., counters, snap cubes) ("We made a train of 24 to show all of the students and then took off 9 to see that 15 are walking." -L.E. and R.B.)
- counting back on number lines ("We start at the number of kids in the class and count back 9 so that we know how many are driving." - A.R. and C.S.)
- subtracting ("We take away how many kids are driving to find out how many are walking." - B.I. and D.N.)

Take a look at some of our work!

  1. Wow, what mathematicians! It was so great to have these visuals. You would have loved to hear the excitement in KB's voice as he explained his peers' strategies to us. Amazing.
