Extra Homework Opportunities

Here are some OPTIONAL ways to help provide additional learning opportunities for your child at home. These activities are designed to connect your child's at-home learning with the units we are studying in our classroom. Your child is welcome to share their learning from these additional activities with our class at school!

Language

1. Reread a favourite story book! Draw pictures and write sentences to show what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Retell the story to a family member.

2. Write a Halloween story or poem! With Halloween quickly approaching, think about a funny or spooky event that might happen on October 31st. Write a short story or poem and share your work with your family.

3. Punctuation Search! Our class has been learning about punctuation. Look through a favourite picture book and point out where you see capitals, periods, exclamation marks, question marks, and commas. Show your family the actions for each and tell your family why they are important.

Math

1. There are patterns everywhere! Look for patterns in your everyday life. Tell your family about the core of the pattern (the part that continues to repeat), the pattern rule, and how you could extend the pattern.

2. Create a pattern! Use coloured pasta, markers, or toys to create an interesting pattern. Tell your family about the pattern rule and show them how you can extend it.

3. What is your family's favourite....? Think of a question and survey your family. Make a bar graph or pictograph to show what you found out.

4. Show how you can make a number! Pick your favourite number. Show how you can make that number in different ways. (Example: 10 can be made of 5 and 5, 7 and 3, 2 and 8...)

Science

1. Go on a nature walk. Talk to your family about the signs of fall that you see.

2. Think of something that you are curious about. Do you want to know where lady bugs go in the autumn? Are you wondering what part of the world monarch butterflies fly to during the winter? Visit the Aurora Public Library and find out the answers! You can also visit the Rick Hansen Public Library at recess to do some additional research.

3. Discuss how people adapt to the seasons. Talk to your family about how our lives change in each season. Examples: How do our families exercise in each season? How do our families dress in each season?

Art

1. Visit an Art Gallery. Here are links to some possible locations:

Health

1. Make a safety plan. What would your family do if there was a fire? If the carbon monoxide detector went off? Create an evacuation plan with your family.
