Library Book Exchange

Our scheduled Library exchange times are:

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday

Learning to read is one of the most important and fun parts of the Grade 1 program. This year, your child will be involved in many whole class, small group, and individual lessons and activities that will help him/her to succeed as a reader. It is also crucial that your son or daughter reads at home every night.

There are two components to the at-home reading program this year.

1. Independent Practice

*Please note that our 'levelled readers' are not yet available for checkout. We hope these books will be up and running soon!

To ensure that your child has reading material available at home and at his/her level, our class will be visiting the library to exchange our books three times a week. We will be taking a new, independent practice book (a levelled reader) on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The levelled book should be an easy level for your child so that he/she can read it independently while still building his/her vocabulary and fluency.
Listening to your child read is also valuable!  Please encourage your son or daughter to read aloud to you, a brother or sister, a grandparent, family pet, etc.  Once your child has finished reading their books, please help him/her to fill out the reading log form.

2. Picture Books

Students will also have an opportunity to take a picture book home to share with their families. You will have two weeks to keep this book at home and enjoy it with your child. We will return these picture books and check new books out every other Monday.  You are welcome to record the title of the picture books on your child’s reading log, as well as any additional books that you might be reading (e.g., books from the public library, from your home library).

Happy reading! J
